What’s the Blue Side of an Eraser Really For?

If you grew up believing that the blue side of a two-tone eraser was meant to erase ink, you’re not alone. It’s one of those classic school myths that somehow spread across classrooms everywhere — but the truth might surprise you.

Despite popular belief, the blue side isn’t designed to erase pen ink. In fact, trying to do so might just tear your paper and leave a mess. The real reason it’s blue — and rougher than the pink side — is because it’s meant to erase pencil marks from thicker, heavier paper.

Think sketch paper, illustration boards, or textured surfaces. The rough texture helps scrape off the graphite more effectively from these tougher materials, where the softer pink side might smudge instead of cleanly erasing.

So next time you reach for that blue eraser, skip the ink — and save it for the good paper.
